- W52445985 abstract "In recent work, a thermo-hydrodynamic-neutronic analysis was performed for a fast, uranium carbide (UC)-fueled spacecraft nuclear in-core thermionic reactor. This reactor had been designed for both electricity generation and nuclear thermal propulsion purposes to deliver a thermal thrust of {approximately}5000 N by a specific impulse of 670 s at a hydrogen exit temperature of {approximately}1900 K. For this nuclear thermal thrust, the total energy generation was calculated at {approximately}10.44 kW(thermal). On the other hand, during the power mode, energy generation is {approximately}640 kW(thermal) with power levels of {approximately}50 kW. Because a thermionic reactor is a very compact critical assembly, it has an extremely high neutron leakage. Reactor control can, elegantly, be performed through the manipulation of the radial neutron leakage with the help of the rotating reflector drums containing B{sub 4}C segments. Because the neutron capture reaction in {sup 10}B is exothermic, the control drums will be producing nuclear heat during reactor operations under neutron irradiation. While the heat generation in the reflector control drums may be low and may not require a heat removal system during the power phase, a cooling system for the boronated drums may be needed during the thrust phase.
