- W52490667 abstract "This thesis, on the topic of the figure of the beautiful boy as represented in the work of Martin Boyd, examines Boyd’s writing in relation to queer and postcolonial questions, and questions of aestheticism, to argue that the literary figuring of the exile of these beautiful boys is integral to aestheticised homosexuality. The main questions asked are: in what ways are representations of the sexuality of these beautiful boys connected to ideas about aestheticism, exile, and the Graeco-Christian myth; and in what ways can this reveal the queer nature of Boyd’s writing, and, therefore, the queer blindness of much extant critical discussion of this author. Aestheticised queer characters, especially “beautiful boys,” or, more precisely, beautiful young men, predominate in Martin Boyd’s work. More often than not, the queer aesthetes in Boyd’s writing belong to the upper class. For various reasons, queer issues have been infrequently discussed in relation to Boyd’s large body ofwork. This thesis implements a queer reading approach, in order to argue that Boyd’s interest in classicism and aestheticism are ways of “talking about homosexuality” that require interpreting; the destabilization of normative gender identity is therefore an issue. In Australia, critics such as the radical nationalists, who did not discuss queer issues, also tended to slight Boyd because he writes of upper class rather than working class characters. Often hand-in-hand with aestheticised queer characters in Boyd’s writing is a sense of these characters being at a remove – they are exiles –from the society in which they live. They are queer boys or young men who are either geographically exiled, or emotionally and spiritually exiled. Equally as often, their search for “home” can be understood as a search for a place within the Graeco-Christian tradition or myth, as Boyd calls it; a search that is intimately connected to aestheticised queerness. Boyd represents homosexuality in an oblique, ambiguous, and aestheticised way which requires queer reading strategies to make it visible." @default.
