- W52514056 abstract "Cellulose is the most abundant naturally occurring organic polymer on the planet. It comprises the structural component of the primary cell wall of higher plants and green algae, and it is also formed by bacteria, some fungi, and tunicates (invertebrate marine organisms). The cellulose polymer chain is derived from d-glucose units, which condense through beta (1–4) glycosidic bonds giving a rigid straight chain having many inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds among the many hydroxyl groups. This feature allows the cellulose chains to pack closely to give areas of high crystallinity within the polymer. Cellulose fibers have been the mainstay of the North American pulping industry since the early 1900s and the use of conventional fully bleached kraft pulps in printing and writing products has helped to fuel the GDP of many nations. In kraft pulps, the cellulose fibers have typical dimensions of approximately 25–50 µm in width and 1–3 mm in length and are composed of amorphous (disordered) zones and crystalline zones. In recent years, the changing worldwide economic climate has opened the door to efforts aimed at expanding and maximizing this unique and renewable forest resource in alternative ways. The disassembly of the cellulose fibers into macro- and nanocomponents has offered expanded applications and has provided the potential for the development of a range of unique and fascinating products with the potential to transform the forest industry." @default.
