- W52681510 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). The first observation of XRMS in an antiferromagnetic system was in holmium. The intrinsic high wave-vector resolution of X-ray scattering allow using nonresonant magnetic X-ray scattering measurements to observe that in certain temperature ranges, the modulation wave vector locks to commensurate wave vectors. The high wave-vector resolution coupled with the ability to separate charge from magnetic scattering through the polarization dependence has resulted in a far greater understanding of the magnetic ordering in the rare-earth series. X-ray wavelengths associated with the transition metal resonances match the layer thickness typically found in multilayer systems, so resonant Bragg diffraction measurements are possible. In addition, coupling the diffraction measurements with magnetic circular dichroism allows a quantitative measure of the magnetic moments through application of the sum rules." @default.
