- W52880726 abstract "The analytical procedures required to evaluate contaminants in complex samples are usually cumbersome and involve several operational steps. Hence, a large time interval between sampling and analysis is sometimes mandatory. It is often desirable or necessary to store collected samples prior to analysis for contaminants. It is therefore important to establish preservation and storage techniques that will ensure sample integrity and will not alter the precision or accuracy of analysis. Several types of sample treatment have been studied to avoid analyte losses during sample manipulation and storage. This chapter reviews the factors that affect the stability of contaminants in environmental samples during storage. The three main environmental compartments, water, sediment and biota, are considered. Several possible mechanisms for losses of analytes are proposed, and various reported approaches for prevention of such losses are discussed. Understanding the stability of analytes during sampling, storage, and analysis is crucial to minimize potential errors and to assess the environmental problem accurately." @default.
