- W52905560 abstract "All his life, Daniel Defoe was deeply involved in the political issues and controversies of contemporary England. A prolific political writer employed by successive ministries, he reported on nearly every aspect of English domestic and foreign policy during a career in journalism that lasted close to three decades. Much more than a reporter of events, Defoe was a man of intense political passion, and on more than one occasion his pronounced Whiggism led him to the pillory. Robinson Crusoe, written in 1719, is no exception to Defoe's political temper. Though set on an isolated island, Defoe's novel deals with the most significant and controversial political issue of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the nature, origin, and reproduction of sovereign power.l Questions concerning power, property, and legitimacy are posed in the very opening of the novel because Robinson, the youngest of three brothers, has become the inheriting son. His two elder brothers, who had superior claims to their father's estate, were unable to assert their birthrights under primogeniture, through circumstances that Robinson relates: had two elder Brothers, one of which was Lieutenant Collonel to an English Regiment of Foot in Flanders, formerly commanded by the famous Coll. Lockhart, and was killed at the Battle near Dunkirk against the Spaniards: What became of my second Brother I never knew any more than my Father or Mother did know what was become of me.2 Crusoe's father, a successful merchant who has since left off his trade and has purchased a small estate, wishes to settle it on his son. But Robinson cannot accept his legacy, nor can he pursue the career for which his father had begun to prepare him, for he is differently inclined:" @default.
