The plate-count method is the standard for determining the number of microorganisms due to its high reliability, despite the requirement for a long incubation period lasting from 12 h to a few days. A number of other methods, which measure the number of microorganisms in shorter periods, have been developed and commercialized. For example, optical methods using light scattering or penetration, chemical analysis such as chromatography, impedance methods, and ATP methods are attractive alternatives to the conventional plate-count method. The ATP method can detect microorganisms in a particularly short time period, typically a few minutes. The new methods are, however, not very reliable and/or count dead cells as well as living cells." @default.
