- W53260275 abstract "won the Nobel Prize in 1969 to the strange and discordant sounds of a rhetoric which could not have been less appropriate: From that position, in the realms of annihilation, the writing of Samuel rises like a miserere from all mankind, its muffled minor key sounding liberation to the oppressed and comfort to those in need. This marked the end of a decade which started with two important events: the publica? tion of Beckett's last full-length novel, Comment cest (translated as How It Is in 1964), and the appearance of the first book in English about him, Hugh Kenner's Samuel A Critical Study, both in 1961. There is a certain irony in this juxtaposition. In a decade when found words more and more difficult to come by, his critics seemed to come by them with increasing ease and assurance. A page-long review of a number of items in the December 11, 1970, London Times Literary Supplement put the case very neatly: Thus, as the author's writings diminish to a thin trickle the volume of criticism swells to a (p. 1442). We shall be concerned with the latest phases of this flood in the essay which follows. One sure indication that the industry has been bursting at the seams is that the unobtrusive book notice or review has been replaced by the longish review-essay. Unencouraging titles like Beckett: At Another Impasse {Journal of European Studies, Dec. 1971) and Old Bottles for Now Beckett (Journal of Modern Literature, Vol. 2, No. 3) seem to suggest that all is not healthy. Indeed some of the recent books prove disappointing when measured against those splendid studies by Hugh Kenner, Frederick J. Hoffman, Ruby Cohn, Raymond Federman, and John Fletcher. has been uncommonly fortunate with his early commentators, perhaps less so with those who have written about him in the early 1970s. This generalization needs much qualification." @default.
