• W53517616 abstract "We test standard models of long-wavelength, drift-kinetic plasma turbulence by comparing nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations to fluctuation measurements in the core of NSTX plasmas, paying particular attention to the radial correlation length. This work extends studies of core plasma turbulence to low aspect ratio, and finite r* effects (i.e., profile variations) are expected to be important. Consequently, the turbulence is simulated with the GYRO code [1], which allows variation in the density, temperatures, and safety factor and their gradients across the simulation domain. The simulations employ a fully drift-kinetic treatment of the electrons, and include transverse electromagnetic fluctuations. Previous work on linear stability in spherical tokamaks found that low-k modes are commonly unstable in the outer half of the plasma [2, 3, 4], but they are relatively easily stabilized by sheared ExB flows [3, 4]. This motivated the measurements of core fluctuations to focus on relatively slowly rotating, low power, low beta, L-mode plasmas. These discharges have peaked density profile shapes that enable a correlation reflectometer [5, 6] to access the plasma core. The plasma fluctuations were measured in a density range of 1-2x10^19 /m^3, which corresponds to a wide range of minor radii: 0.2a < r/a < 0.95. At a fixed radial location the density and temperature gradients varied quite substantially from plasma to plasma, so a wide parameter space is available for comparing simulations to measured fluctuation spectra." @default.
