- W53661246 abstract "Chicago State University (CSU) has partnered with the University of Alaska at Anchorage to implement their RBSEU (Research-Based Science Education for Undergraduates) curricula in both our introductory and advanced undergraduate astronomy courses. The curricula engage students in the scientific enterprise, with real research. We have adapted three of the RBSEU projects: Killer Asteroids, Photometric Redshift, and Making Color Images for use with our students. We have also administered course assessments for the introductory courses. We describe our implementation in the introductory course, preliminary research on the effectiveness of the materials, and the successes and challenges we face as the project expands to different instructional environments. We also describe the research results of students working on these projects as part of their advanced undergraduate astronomy training. Implementation in the Introductory Course The Chicago State Course o Guiding principle: students learn both the content and processes of science, including making predictions and testing them experimentally, asking questions in order to gain understanding, relating it to everyday life, and reflecting on results. The class forms a scientific community. o Active classroom: interactive lecture integrated with short tasks, e.g. CSU worksheets, Lecture Tutorials (LT)2, Mastering Astronomy (MA)3, and longer laboratory-oriented activities. CSU course workbook ties materials together. o Inquiry-based lab activities were developed from existing verification labs following the guiding principles for our course materials. o Students also complete observing project using the Global Telescope Network (GTN). Project includes an observing proposal, peer reviews/review panel, and powerpoint presentation. o Class meets 4 hr/week, approximately 20 students. Goals of RBSEU Curricula: o To teach that science is a process of discovery, not just a body of knowledge. o To increase positive attitudes towards science, and toward pursuing STEM careers, by giving students an opportunity to do authentic research. o To develop important skills such as critical thinking, teamwork and goaldriven work skills that are important in any career path. RBSEU Labs: Adaptation o The goals of the RBSEU curricula are a perfect fit with those of the CSU course, which is why we chose to adopt them at CSU. o However, the U. Alaska course has a traditional 3-hour lab period for the activities (in addition to a 3-hour lecture), which the CSU course does not have. o We modified the activities for time and based on the strengths and needs of our student population. For example, in the asteroids activity, students examine the energy of impact for one asteroid in class and a similar case was moved to the “take home” part of the lab. o The classroom assistant, Melissa Nickerson, a pre-service teacher who took the course the previous year, tested the activities before they were performed in class, making suggestions for improvement and testing each sub-section for time." @default.
