- W53762223 abstract "This chapter extends the exploration of conscious forms of sleep and wakefulness into their associated emotional behaviors and feelings. Dreams are characterized by the presence of emotions. The intensely experienced negative emotions of nightmares (anxiety, fear, terror, anger, rage, embarrassment, and disgust) are also associated with other parasomnias including hypnogogic hallucinations, sleep paralysis, and the night terrors and confusional arousals occurring out of deep sleep. The neuroanatomical basis for fear (the primary negative emotion) takes place in four primary areas of the central nervous system (hippocampus, amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, and anterior cingulate cortex) that operate in concert. Dreaming is likely to have a functional role in the processing of the emotions associated with negative life experiences, with recurrent distressing nightmares occurring when this system is overwhelmed by severe trauma. Recurrent nightmares are the most common symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is difficult to treat and symptoms may be experienced recurrently throughout life. In PTSD, both medications and behavioral therapies, particularly cognitive–behavioral treatment, have shown success in the suppression of the associated nightmares. Some creative individuals have discovered credible paths that integrate their trauma-associated nightmares into their life work. This role for nightmares in the creative process is reviewed, including an example PTSD nightmare in which a trauma-associated nightmare is used as part of the creative process of a successful screenwriter." @default.
