- W53805250 abstract "This chapter discusses the relationship of Endotrypanum and other members of the trypanosomatide and its possible bearing upon the evolution of certain hemoflagellates of the new world. The study demonstrates the validity of Endotrypanum's genus being trypanosomatidae. The study describes that two sloths kept in captivity developed unusually heavy infections: in thin blood smears from these animals, a few intraerythrocytic leishmanomorphic forms were found. These observations when added to those of Deane (1948)—who found leishmanial bodies in the viscera of seven two-toed sloths—strongly support Deane's hypothesis that Endotrypanum divides as leishmaniae in some internal organs. These characters of Endotrypanum appeared to be in between Leishmania and Trypanosoma and suggest that certain trypanosomes of the new world may have evolved from a Leishmania-like ancestor of primitive mammals rather than directly from trypanosomatids of insects. This hypothesis draws attention to the fact that an additional line of evolution may have given rise to certain new world hemoflagellates." @default.
