- W53944392 abstract "Thirty kinds of tree seeds were given a dose of 1 to 20 kr of gamma rays, x rays, and fast neutrons. Observations were made on hundreds, or even thousands, of seedlings of one variety in order to determine the size and shape of the leaf, the leaf coloring, the angle of leaf growth, the rate of growth, and its resistance to cold. The greatest number of mutations were found in Acer negundo, Syringa vulagris, Syringa Josikeaea, Philadelphus pecinensis, and Populus nigra. The mutation rate was multiplied bv a factor of 10 to 100 over the natural spontaneous mutation rate by treating the seeds with ionizing radiation. Examples of larger and faster growing plants were more frequently observed after treatment by irradiation. The leaf area in certain compared to the controls.
