- W5397249 abstract "Agricultural environments are usually characterized by very high spatial interand intra-field variability. The objective of this study is to investigate the potentials and restrictions of high spatial resolution, multidimensional SAR imagery for crop type mapping and for determining infield crop variability. The experiments were carried out in northern Germany using airborne Xand L-band acquired by the german E-SAR sensor with a ground resolution of 1 m. The results indicate that radar backscatter information has the potential to discriminate different crop types and to identify locations of different crop development within fields. A separability analysis demonstrates the potential of Xand L-band for crop type mapping, with increasing performance using different frequencies and polarizations. Furthermore single radar bands and several linear band combinations were tested for determining infield biomass variability in winter wheat. The X-band backscatter was most suitable for mapping the variability, whereas the potential of horizontal polarized data (HH) is slightly better than vertical polarization (VV). Relationships between crop parameter and radar backscatter information were improved by using combinations of Xand L-band. Even if the results show the inherent potential of radar data for agriculture, however some difficulties for practical applications still remain. Especially the highly variable radar backscatter of crops in dependence of various factors (e.g. crop geometry, plant surface wetness) make the interpretation and reliability a challenge." @default.
