- W5433462 abstract "Samples of pure tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) were frozen and irradiated with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays and 1.5-Mev electrons. The yield of polymer was determined gravimetrically after rapid cooling of the irradiated samples. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum was taken to determine the absolute concentration of radicals. The initial rate of polyruerization of solid TFE, which was determined from the yield of polymer after the first 9 minutes of irradiation (0.06 to 0.8% conversion), increased with increasing temperature and reached a maximum near the melting point of the monomer. A decrease in the rate of polymerization of more than an order of magnitude took place on irradiating the monomer at the melting point. The activation energy for the solid-phase polymerization was 0.6 kcal/mole from --196 to -155 deg C and 1.6 kcal/mole from - - 155 to -- 131 deg C. The activation energy for the liquid-phase polymerization was 6 kcal/mole. The polymer yieid for the solid-state irradiation was 100 molecules at - 196 deg C and 1000 molecules per 100 ev at the melting point for conversions up to 1%. The yield of radicals at-- 196 deg C was approximates 0.4 per 100 ev for a dose of 5 tomore » 10 x 10/sup 6/ rads. A sharp drop in the concentration of radicals took place in the temperature interval of -- 80 to --50 deg C and was accompanied by a change in the form of the EPR spectrum due to the build-up of a polymeric radical.
