- W54563057 abstract "Conventionally the soil is prepared by a primary tillage consisting of one to two deep ploughings with mould board ploughs or chisels to uproot the old stubbles and break the land into clods. This is followed by a secondary tillage with two to three harrowings to break the clods and bring the soil to a fine tilth. If planting is done in a system of ridges and furrows then a fine tilth is not so necessary. But for flat-bed planting a good tilth seems essential. Sugarcane, however, does not require as fine a tilth as that needed for smallgrain crops. In Cuba and Brazil deep cultivation to a depth of at least 30 cm is recommended to break the subsurface hard pans and decrease the bulk density. In Hawaii subsoiling is practised (Husz 1972) to a depth of 45–60 cm. In Australia and Taiwan intensive cultivations are practised to break the surface crust, hard pans and ridges. Husz (1972) suggested that an approximate pore ratio of 1:1:1 for large, medium and small pores assures the establishment of both plant and ratoon canes. In areas of high rainfall and low-lying flat land requiring adequate drainage, cane is planted on cambered beds, as in Guyana and Fiji (see Chapter 6). These beds are frequently 6.1 m wide with side drains of 0.6 m width and 0.45 m depth. In the Louisiana bank system, cane is grown on special ridges and furrows known as ‘turtleback’. The ridges are 0.45 m high and spaced at intervals of 1.8 m (see Chapter 6). The special feature of this system is that it permits the total mechanization of cane culture (Blackburn 1984). On sloping land ridges and furrows are made along the contours and the cane is planted in the furrow and covered by breaking one ridge. Another unbroken ridge conserves soil and moisture and prevents soil erosion (loc. cit.)." @default.
