- W54563274 abstract "This chapter focuses on the decomposition of nitrogenous compounds by bacteria under anaerobic conditions without the intervention of inorganic oxidizing agents such as sulfate, nitrate, or carbonate. The catabolism of amino acids is carried out by a large number of anaerobic or facultative anaerobic bacteria. This is done either with single amino acids or pairs of amino acids or one amino acid in combination with one non-nitrogenous compound. All processes that liberate ammonia from amino acids are called deaminations. Bacterial deamination proceeds in several ways that differ according to the enzymatic constitution of the organism and to the conditions prevailing in the medium. Clostridium tetanomorphum exhibits an anaerobic oxidative deamination, which is accompanied by the evolution of hydrogen. This type of reaction may be regarded as an anaerobic device for obtaining energy from amino acids without the use of a hydrogen acceptor. Arginine metabolism is a significant metabolic step for species of Mycoplasma , which have been isolated from cell cultures. The conversion of arginine is rapid and appears to be the major source of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)." @default.
