- W545872 abstract "Publisher Summary Electrical activity of single neurons as waking animals carry out behavioral acts is important to determine time and space constants of the cellular interactions that may be responsible for the organization of behavior. Discharge patterns of the different neuronal systems that are presumably involved in the command and control of this type of movement were studied in naive monkeys and more quantified in overtrained monkeys: in area 4 of the cerebral cortex neurons discharge prior to muscle activity and their discharge frequency is predictive of muscular contraction. Similarly neurons in area 5 discharge prior to arm projection and manipulation. This led to focus attention on two aspects of this system using unit recording in these areas during the first stages of operant conditioning, when repetition of a movement that fit a priori criteria appears: (1) the possible temporal patterns of the frequency of discharge during the behavioral events—that is, during the conditioned movement itself and the reward-related movement—and (2) a comparison between changes in neuronal discharge frequency and changes in behavior that occur during one conditioning session." @default.
