- W54641855 abstract "The effective degree of micellar dissociation ofcetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles has beendetermined from electrochemical (EMF) measurements using aCTAB selective electrode. Thermodynamic parameters havebeen determined using the `Ion binding model' and showdominance of hydrophobic interactions in free CTABmicellization. The enthalpy contribution is insignificant.The binding of the surfactant CTAB onto the neutral watersolublehydrophobic polymers: poly(propylene oxide) (PPO),poly(vinylmethylether) (PVME) and ethyl(hydroxyethyl)cellulose (EHEC) has also been investigated by the EMFtechnique. In all cases it has been shown that thesurfactant binds to the polymer and the bound surfactantexists in the form of small aggregates. The EMF data hasbeen used to investigate the characterization of thebinding process.The formation of inclusion complexes between alkylpyridiniumbromide (CPyBr) and alkyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CIITAB) with a- and s-cyclodextrins (CDs) have alsobeen investigated by the EMF technique. In addition thethermodynamics of the inclusion on a- and s-CDs by thesurfactants : CTAB, CPyBr, alkylsulfates (COSO3Na) , andalkanesulfonates (CnSO3Na) have been carried out using anOmega isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC). Whereas s-CDsystems form predominantly 1: 1 complexes, a-CD form 1: 1 and a 2: 1 complexes with surfactants having long hydrophobictails. For both a- and s-CD the complexation constantsincrease as the chain length of the surfactant increases,showing that the driving force dominating the formation ofthese complexes is the hydrophobic effect. The 1: 1 s-CD/surfactant complexation is accompanied by large increasein entropy. The 1: 1 a-CD/surfactant complexation and all2: 1 complexation are accompanied by a large increase inenthalpy." @default.
