- W54808410 abstract "PHYSICS AT THE INDY is an exciting program that introduces physics principles through auto racing. It was designed as an effort to help allay crisis in science The project takes two forms: videotape of five one-minute segments introducing physics principles, accompanied by teacher's guide; and an interactive videodisc incorporating five one-minute lessons, barcoded teachers' guide and accompanying software. Visitors to The Children's Museum of interact with videodisc program at two kiosks located at Indianapolis 500 exhibit. This article describes process of assembling complex partnership needed to successfully complete project. The authors hope that others who wish to produce an expensive, interdisciplinary project will be encouraged by their story. * Crisis in Science Education As American society becomes more technologically complex, there is growing need for work force that understands physics. Many students are locked out of chance to major in sciences in college because they have not taken needed prepatory courses, like hihg school physics. Although 96% of students have opportunity to take physics, only one in five chooses to do so.[1] This lack of preparation and accompanying scientific illiteracy is commonly called the crisis in science education. Perhaps one answer as to why students avoid taking physics in school lies in widespread perception that physics deals only with abstract matters of little interest to them. Physicists are stereotyped in popular cultures as mad scientists, spies, monsters or sorcerers in white lab coats. Attention must be paid to methods of teaching physics too. Instead of formal lecturers, physics teachers should be piquing students' interest with lab experiences and relevant, hands-on examples. Students need to see beyond stereotype of a physicist. They need to be made aware that physics is found in their everyday lives, not just on blackboard or in lab. To be prepared for science courses in college, students must begin to perceive physics as an interesting subject by time they are in middle school. Then they will enroll in high school physics classes. Dr. Ruth Howes, Ball State University physics professor, wanted to help solve the crisis in science education. Her idea was to sell physics to students with video spots, same way hamburgers are sold on TV. Her thought was to make physics more exciting and relevant by connecting it to something young people can understand. Howes' idea was seed for PHYSICS AT THE INDY 500. * Auto Racing as Hook It's easy to get caught up in excitement, pageantry and traditions of auto race. Held annually in late May, race attracts half-million fans; millions more watch it on TV. Howes visited Motor Speedway, home of Indy 500, and was amazed at number of physics principles demonstrated at track. She shared her thoughts with Nancy Carlson, telecommunications professor at Ball State. In July 1988, they decided to pursue video project using Indy as their hook for demonstrating physics to middle-school students. Neither professor had connections at speedway, nor were funds available for such project. However, Carlson did know Dr. Beverly Pitts, professor of journalism and now Associate Provost at Ball State. Pitts was also consultant for National Football League Players Association, and because of her sportswriting expertise and contacts, she was asked to join project. The team envisioned project as series of five public service announcements (PSAs) introducing physics principles as they manifest themselves through racing examples. The five principles chosen were: Doppler effect; conservation of energy; force of friction; centripetal force; and Bernoulli effect. …" @default.
