- W54987439 abstract "There is a kind of presupposition that Western countries alone are capable of industrialization. How could Japan, a non-Western country, achieve the level of economic progress and successful indus trialization that she has, it is often asked. In my opinion, given an integrated and stable structure, technological competence and capable manage rial staff and given an adequate labour force, any country is able to achieve industrialization. Styles and ways of industrialization may, however, differ, depending on the social and cultural configuration of the country. I believe that countries which were as highly developed long before the modern period, as India and China, will achieve their industrialization in their own ways, though the process would take much more time in comparison with Japan. Japan's industrialization has taken place in a very Japanese way, quite different from that of Europe. Perhaps this Japanese way had more aspects that favoured the speeding up of the process of industrialization as compared with that of India or China. Hence, in this lecture, I would particularly wish to draw your attention to the socio-economic aspects of this Japanese way, and present some significant elements which shaped Japan's industrialization. The development of the Japanese system which contributed to her indus trialization has its roots in Tokugawa Japan, which preceded the modern era. Let me point out some of the distinguishable socio-economic features in pre-mod ern Japan, which contributed to the formation of a unique Japanese system. Japan, being an island country, has had poor resources from ancient times. But the acute shortage of arable land came to be particularly felt from the end of the eighteenth century, in all parts of Japan, as the nationwide development of agricultural and commercial economy unfolded under the stable feudal gov ernment. In comparison, India and China, being in the continent, have always had frontiers for expanding populations and moreover, there was much more" @default.
