- W55030261 abstract "This chapter discusses cerebral metabolic abnormalities in thiamine deficiency. Severe thiamine deprivation may affect the nervous system by causing peripheral neuropathy and Wernicke's encephalopathy. The latter disorder consists of ocular disturbances, ataxia, and impaired mental function. These changes seem to progress with time and are more easily reversible in the initial stages of the disorder. A second major mechanism for the pathogenesis of low thiamine encephalopathy assumes an abnormality in cerebral neurotransmitters. Decreased pyruvate decarboxylase activity may result in reduced production of acetyl CoA with subsequent decreased synthesis of cerebral acetylcholine. Decreased concentrations of acetyl CoA and acetylcholine have been reported in thiamine-deficient brain. The chapter describes a theory that stipulates that thiamine plays a direct role in nerve impulse conduction and is, therefore, necessary for normal neuronal electrical activity." @default.
