- W55268436 abstract "This chapter illustrates hierarchical learning, development, and representation of songs of birds. The singing of birds is a special form of communication. Because this singing is very often a learned behavior, what birds sing and how they sing are likely to provide information about how they learn and retrieve the stored information. This basic concept of singing is that of a song “strophe” as the specific signal pattern used in singing interactions. Analyses suggest that a song is a significant chunk of information stored in a bird's brain. Birds' songs can be characterized by structural hierarchy. This behavior is further characterized according to procedural hierarchy. Information about altered hierarchies tells us about birds' cognitive processes, and how certain aspects of vocal learning in birds have parallels with human behavior patterns. In the song acquisition of birds, a chunk equivalent is given by a song (strophe), and a song can be regarded as a unit of sense as well. It is more or less established that songs are units of interaction that play a particular role, for example, during vocal communication among neighbors. On formal grounds, songs have been compared to sentences." @default.
