- W55526404 abstract "This chapter focuses on the hardware and operating system environment. It discusses the parallel environment that consists of three components: (1) multiprocessing hardware, (2) system support for parallelism, and (3) parallelizing software development tools. These three components are required for a programmer to easily and successfully develop parallel programs. They are all important. The chapter presents the multiprocessing architecture of the Power Series computers and the enhancements made to UNIX that support parallelization. High-performance parallel programs can be created in either C or FORTRAN using the IRIS Power Languages. The heart of the Power Series machines is the MlPS-designed R3000 RISC processor, paired with the companion R3010 math coprocessor. A number of buses and caches are employed that maximize data and instruction transfer between multiple processors and shared memory as well as to input/output devices. A special bus is used to coordinate and optimize fine-grained homoparallization. Synchronization is coordinated by the Sync bus, which provides 65,000 toggle variables usable by both the operating system and applications." @default.
