• W55540557 abstract "In this study, we present an integrated economic model for the joint optimization of production quantity, quality control, and maintenance policy. The economic Production Quantity (EPQ) model is a very useful model in production planning and traditionally, it is based on the assumption that the production process is perfect and produces items of perfect quality. However, product quality may not always perfect. It is usually dependent on the operating state of a production process. Once the process shifts to an out-of-control state, an increased number of defective items are produced until some inspection and maintenance activities are performed to bring the process back to an in-control state. The effect of production-lot-size on the quality of the product may also be significant. If the production process shifts to an out-of-control state at the beginning of the production cycle, the entire lot will contain more defective items. Hence, it is wiser to reduce the production cycle to decrease the percentage of defective items and thus, improve output quality. On the other hand, reduced production cycle may result in an increase in costs due to frequent setups. A balance must be maintained so that the total cost is minimized. The production of quality goods may also depends upon the operating condition of the machine tools. It is assumed that the cost of maintaining the equipment increases with age, therefore, an economic age replacement strategy is also needed to minimize the total cost of the system." @default.
