- W5562094 abstract "The Euratom Commission agreed to the construction of a specific experimental reactor, ESSOR, for the study of the technological problems which still exist for reactors of the ORGEL type. The ESSOR installation is being built in the Ispra common research center. Reactors of the ORGEL type are heavy water reactors with good neutron economy whose cooling is accomplished by a low melting point mixture of terphenylene. This mixture, under the influence of heat and radiation, is liable to decompose but the effect becomes significant only at temperatures above 420 deg C. Operation with liquid temperatures of 400 deg C is therefore possible without further complication. An essential part of the ORGEL development program is the testing of a complete cooling channel. Experiments with various constructions for the cooling channels, long-term experiments with the channel including the fuel element, and life testing of the fuel elements in representative numbers of pieces are provided for in the ESSOR reactor. The aim of these investigations is to explore the mechanical behavior of the compiete ORGEL channel under operating conditions which are typical of power reactors.
