- W55762429 abstract "The potential influence of paternal exposures on the health of pregnancy and the offspring has been of interest to toxicologists and epidemiologists for some time. There are several lines of justification for pursuing the possibility that paternal exposures could affect development during pregnancy and beyond. First, the causes of the vast majority of common reproductive problems, including pregnancy loss, congenital defects, pretcrm birth, and fetal growth retardation have yet to be identified. In the face of limited success in studies that have focused primarily on fetal exposures through the pregnant woman, a broader conceptualization of potential causes is worthy of exploration. Second, there is extensivs laboratory research which demonstrates that isolated exposures to the male before conception can result in a broad spectrum of adverse reproductive health outcomes, including pregnancy loss, congenital anomalies, and growth retardation (Olshan & Faustman, 1993). These studies do not prove that such phenomena occur in humans, but firmly demonstrate that they could. Finally, there is a social and political context for this avenue of investigation involving gender discrimination and equity. The idea that the male partner, not the woman alone, has some accountability for the success of the reproductive process has obvious implications for regulation of workplace exposures (i.e., the notion that developmental concerns extend beyond pregnant women), as well as part of the broader societal theme of increased male responsibility and accountability in parenting. The political context does not make it more or less likely that the father has influence beyond conception, but it does increase enthusiasm for research to address the possibility." @default.
