- W5585265 abstract "Publisher Summary The maintenance of the fluid balance involves at least two different regulation mechanisms: (1) fluid intake and (2) fluid excretion. The chapter demonstrates that the stimulation of the renin–angiotensin system and that the administration of renin or angiotensin induces a drinking response in rats. Estimations of the plasma renin concentration (PRO) following the administration of the blood pressure lowering drugs used in experiments described in the chapter showed a marked elevation after all drugs that caused the drinking response. The rise in IRC after these drugs could be blocked by propranolol. Thus, the β-sympatholytic antagonized the effect of the blood pressure lowering drugs on PRO and on the water intake. . The assumption that the renin–angiotensin system is responsible for the mediation of the drinking response following the blood pressure lowering drugs explains that removal of the kidneys, the main source of renin, prevented the drinking response following isoproterenol, phentolamine or hydralazine." @default.
