- W560366984 abstract "Unburnt colliery shale is the waste product from coal mining and this study has been directed towards examining its use in highway construction. In view of its inherent low quality some form of stabilisation is necessary to produce a material capable of carrying the stresses associated with pavement structures. The work reported in this paper has been concerned with the use of cement and lime as stabilising agents. The results reported have been obtained from extensive laboratory studies. The suitability of the stabilised shales has been assessed using characteristics such as strength, frost resistance and resistance to immersion. It has been clearly shown that certain colliery shales can be stabilised with cement to produce material suitable for inclusion in pavements both as sub-base or roadbase material. However, with the more plastic shales, the cement requirement increases to over 15 per cent and it is not a viable treatment in the current economic climate. The response of these materials to cement has been significantly improved by the initial addition of a small amount of lime although stabilisation with lime alone was not particularly beneficial. The laboratory results indicate that stabilization with 2 and one half per cent lime plus 7 and one half per cent can give a better product than either 10 per cent lime or 10 per cent cement. These results relate to soil plasticity, compressive strength and durability. (Author/TRRL)" @default.
