- W560653113 abstract "This paper examines one dimension of the role of an incumbent, or candidate, in winning or retaining seats. There is a body of Australian literature on this question although it tends to concentrate on specific contests at particular state or federal elections. An important general analysis of the issue drawn from aggregate data (Bean 1988) has focussed on broader considerations, but necessarily is not tied to case histories. All major parties (and occasionally minor ones and independents) have held state and federal seats where high profile or well known local incumbents or candidates have been successful , often minimizing adverse national or regional voting trends. This study takes, as its area for investigation, non-Brisbane state seats which, from the 1960s to the 1980s, were held by Liberals. When the incumbent retired or was defeated, these seats were lost to the Nationals or ALP. Such seats then experienced an interlude of Liberal representation in localities where that party often had little organisational presence or political infrastructure beyond that generated by the Member.Over this period in Queensland state politics there are 8 such examples. The method chosen for investigation is an analysis of voting figures at polling booth level, together with other pertinent locally generated data. The aim of the paper is to treat these examples on a case by case basis, to explore their similarities and differences, to advance some tentative conclusions to explain their incidence and to suggest more general hypotheses." @default.
