- W56094710 abstract "Hyperthermia in clinical treatment is mostly used locally, either alone or in combination with radio- or chemotherapy. In the treatment of local tumors, this modality is of proven therapeutic benefit (Cavaliere et al. 1982; Dewhirst et al. 1983). A small group of clinicians, however, have tried to apply whole body hyperthermia. Their therapeutic aim is the thermal enhancement of cytostatic drug effects in the treatment of disseminated malignancies (Pettigrew et al. 1974; Barlogie et al. 1979; Bull et al. 1979; Parks et al. 1979; Neumann et al. 1982). In using this modality, it is of critical importance to know whether hyperthermia can damage normal bone marrow and, if enhancement of cytostatic drug effects is indeed achieved, whether the action might be not only on the tumor cells but also on the bone marrow cells. It was therefore the aim of our study to establish whether hyperthermia can enhance the cytotoxicity of several cytostatic drugs on normal human bone marrow cells. For the clinical application of whole body hyperthermia the temperatures and the treatment times must be restricted to a tolerable level. We therefore used a temperature of 40.5° C for 2 h." @default.
