- W561298315 abstract "This report presents, for Australian conditions, models to establish the increasing cost of pavement induced by an increase in axle loading. A description of the interrelationship of the models presented is illustrated in a flow diagram. In developing the models the premise is accepted that a moderate increase in axle loading will not cause a dramatic deterioration of existing pavements but rather a shortening of life, with a given serviceability level being reached at an earlier date. Not only will higher loadings increase the rate at which reshaping/ strengthening and reconstruction work will be needed but they will also increase the cost/ km because of the greater pavement thickness required. It is generally accepted that for practical purposes, knowing the properties of the subgrade and pavement materials, the thickness of road pavement required can be determined from the number of passings of a standard wheel axle load combination along the road. The models have to be specific enough for application to a single length of road of average subgrade strength yet general enough to cater for the empirical content of each of the design procedures in use throughout Australia. Of particular significance in the development of the models is the intention to ensure data collection is reduced to the absolute minimum commensurate with accuracy." @default.
