- W561310347 abstract "Scarcity of crushed rock aggregates and high unit cost of conventional materials(crushed rock) have led the road engineers in many African countries to use materials that they find in the vicinity of road works and make specifications that fit materials rather than the materials fit the specifications. Materials such as lateritic gravel, murram, nodular laterite, calcrete etc, are widespread throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. These materials in their natural state are often found deficient in grading, plasticity and strength to qualify for road base and sub-base. To overcome these deficiencies in soil properties, blending two or more soils together, or adding stabilizing admixtures such as lime and/or Portland cement is a common engineering practice in many countries of the Sub Saharan region.uuThis paper presents the results of one such case study concluded in Uganda. The experimental study described in this paper was primarily directed to assess the suitability of locally available lateritic gravels for subbase and base construction for a major highway project inUganda. Lateritic gravel samples from locally available borrow sources were tested in the laboratory in their natural state (untreated) and also bytreating them with lime and cement in various percentages. The engineering properties investigated were (a) plasticity characteristics (b) compaction properties (c) unconfined compressive strength and (d) CBR tests. Addition of 2 to 4 percent stabilizer (lime or cement) caused a significant increase in the strength of natural lateritic gravel. It was concluded that the local lateritic gravels used in this study can be economically stabilized with lime or cement and can be used for road subbase." @default.
