- W561657485 abstract "The paper answers the question do we need better drivers? and presents results of some studies which help to understand whether and how Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) may increase safety. While drivers are very competent and well able to handle most situations perfectly well, driver errors are indeed involved in most of the cases when an accident happens. ADAS which counteract these errors could thus increase safety - if they are really successful in this manner. There are three main driving tasks where errors account for about 60% of all severe accidents in Germany. ADAS designed to counteract these errors show a large positive effect at least in driving simulator studies. Warnings given well in advance help the driver to adjust his attention and to take more time to evaluate the traffic situation which helps to detect critical objects and avoid collisions. Autonomous emergency braking can prevent rear-end accidents and if a system would prevent very short distances during car-following (e.g., by decelerating autonomously) this could give the driver more time to react himself. Finally, Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) which prevents drivers from going too fast could be very effective to reduce the third kind of error. However, the second part of experiments showed these positive effects could be counteracted if ADAS would just take over these relevant parts of the driving task. Even if only part of the driving task is taken over by the ADAS this seems to decrease situation awareness which could lead to new problems. Thus, from a safety point of view ADAS which are designed for error prevention make much more sense than ADAS aimed at supporting the driver or decreasing the stress of driving. Moreover, the design of these systems and especially the human-machine-interface seems to be crucial to achieve these positive effects. Finally, fully autonomous vehicles could be a good way to really support the drivers, but they would have to be at least as good at the driver (less than 1 accident in 300.000 km)." @default.
