- W561786024 abstract "Research relating compaction to performance has indicated that the benefits of improved compaction can be considerable. Improved method specifications, such as modified rolling, have met with limited success whilst the alternative, an end result specification, requires a suitable method for compaction target assessment. The percentage refusal density (prd) test has been shown to be capable of satisfactorily assessing the level of both basecourse and roadbase bitumen macadams. However, dense bitumen macadam roads in northern Ireland frequently exhibit premature failure in the wearing course and it is suspected this may be due to not achieving adequate compaction levels. Consequently a laboratory investigation was carried out into the repeatability and reproducibility of the prd test method when applied to dense bitumen macadam wearing courses. An experiment was carried out in which forty eight core samples were extracted from a surfacing contract and distributed amongst eight technicians for testing. The results were analysed in accordance with BS 5497 part 1, 1979 (precision of test methods) and this showed the repeatability of the test method to be 1.58 and the reproducibility to be 2.30 for adjacent single cores extracted on a line parallel to the direction of rolling. The range of prd encountered during the tests was 89.4% to 95.4%. The next stage of the investigation was to determine the levels of compaction that have been achieved in n Ireland over the last five years. Approximately twenty five sites were visited and the prd of extracted cores from both the wheel track and the centre of the laid width determined. A series of laboratory tests on 14 mm dense bitumen macadam wearing course samples, which have been compacted to compaction levels that have been found to be representative of insitu material, are currently being carried out. The aim of these tests is to ascertain the practical implications on performance of the varying levels of compaction found on n Ireland roads.(a) for the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 815173." @default.
