- W561793685 abstract "This paper explores prospects and problems regard- ing applying anthropology in United States urban settings. It points out potential gains in addressing problems in urban environments when anthropologists work with and through non-profit organiza- tions. The paper looks into the past of applied anthropology for methodological and theoretical frameworks (viz., action anthro- pology and advocacy anthropology), and into the future of both applied and academic anthropology. It argues that such work can and should be undertaken by academic anthropologists and an- thropology students, as well as by non-academic practicing or applied anthropologists, with benefits to the profession, as well as to non-profit organizations and inner city residents. Finally, it discusses the increasing difficulties that anthropologists, currently mostly Whites, may face if more minorities are not attracted into the profession. It proposes that anthropological assistance to non- profits serving multi-ethnic inner city communities may be one way to attract minorities into the profession. In support of its arguments, the paper presents four case study examples from volunteer work between 1989 and 1993 with three non-profit agencies and a church in Los Angeles, California." @default.
