- W56304098 abstract "i ■ iravel moulds a person, says a proverb in German. Educational trips are a tradition in Europe. In the Middle Ages, an artisan JL would first train with a master of his chosen trade locally, and then add a few years of travel during which he would wander from master to master, learn from each for some months, and at the same time get to know the world. Johann Wolfgang Goethe wrote his impressive Bildungsroman, Wilhelm Meister, in two parts; the Lehrjahre (years of training) and the Wanderjahre (years of travel). Bildungsroman traces the central character's growth in maturity through a process of formative experiences. It is only after the Wanderjahre are complete does the artisan settle in his profession, get married and raise a family These three stages of life are reflected in many biographies of European personalities until the present. In India, travel is traditionally associated with the final stage of life—sanyasa. Travel for a sanyasi is not about gaining experience, but rather about the shedding of all experience, about emptying oneself. Such empyting, it is felt, is best accomplished by moving out of one's normal habitat and environment—to set oneself free from all binding associations and habits. True, there is a strong tradition of pilgrimage linked to travel. A believer is exhorted to go on pilgrimages to a temple, or a holy city, or the grave of a saint, or a holy mountain. The idea is to cleanse oneself by undertaking the hardships of such a trip. Only gradually, the idea of tourism has gripped the imagination of the Indian middle class. Yet, even now much of tourism in India has the undercurrent of a pilgrimage; only the hardships may be missing." @default.
