- W563084251 abstract "Information technology affords an excellent opportunity to offer elderly and impaired people easy access to pre-trip travel information. In order to explore the actual need of more detailed travel information a study was carried out among elderly and impaired people in Sweden. The tentative results show that elderly and impaired people do ask for more detailed pre-trip travel information in order to be able to plan and to carry through a journey with public transportation by bus and train. The results also show which kind of information is considered important by people with different as well as multiple impairments. The study began with five focus group interviews with elderly and impaired people in Halland County in southern Sweden. In order to cover demands from people with different kinds of impairments the interviews were carried out in four groups; hearing-impaired, visually impaired, medically impaired and disabled passengers. A group with elderly people was also interviewed. Every group consisted of 8-12 people with varying degrees of impairment. A total of 57 people were interviewed. The interviews dealt with elderly and disabled passengers demands and requirements of pre-trip travel information for trips with public transportation by train and bus. The focus of the interviews was travel information offered via some mode of information technology. The interviews resulted in a list of demands on pre-trip information expressed in user terms. In order to validate these results a questionnaire survey was carried out among elderly and disabled people in six counties in Sweden. The counties were chosen so that they would represent different aspects of urbanization, infrastructure and communications. The respondents were randomly chosen among members of 3 organizations for elderly people and 9 organizations for impaired people. A total of 4500 questionnaires were sent out of which approximately 50% were returned. The respondents were asked to assess the demands on pre-trip travel information on a 7- grade scale. The respondents were also asked to assess five randomly chosen alternatives of pre-trip information in relation to the others by dividing 100 points among the alternatives according to their own liking. Each respondent answered 40 of a total of 120 questions and also answered 4 questions were 100 points were to be divided between five randomly chosen alternatives. The material is in the process of being analyzed during the summer and fall of 2000. The tentative results show that elderly and impaired people do express a need for more detailed pre-trip information than what has been showed in any study so far. The results so far also indicate which kinds of travel information is most important when different impairments are regarded." @default.
