- W563522089 abstract "This report was presented to the Concrete International Congress in London, 13-18 April 1980. Initial test results concerning the use of the electrical conductivity of steel fibres for the thermal treatment of fresh concrete and for heating hardened concrete are presented. The use of concrete containing steel fibres can result, in addition to the known improvements of this type of material in: an increase in flexural strength, resistance to hard impacts, low clean cracking, and the possibility of heating fresh and hardened concrete by the Joule effect. The investigation, carried out on slabs of variable dimensions, showed that in the case of thermal treatment, the results obtained are similar to those reached with conventional methods (oven curing) as regards thermal cycle and strength with the added advantage of a more even diffusion of heat. Similarly it is possible to heat hardened concrete containing fibres at voltages inversely proportional to the proportion of fibres, the electrical resistivity of hardened concrete, in the case of the present study, being eight times lower than that of the same concrete without fibres. Research is continuing with a view to reducing these resistivities even further and to making a full-scale study of the application of these properties especially as regards the heating of concrete panels and road heating.
