- W56409344 abstract "The memorable place is a place worthy of remembrance, which touches the human spirit in a distinctive way and enables a person to feel alive and connected to the world. Researchers of architecture acknowledge the memorable place has a significant consequence in relationship to what transpires between the mind, body and the architectural environment from an individual and societal perspective. Both architects and students recognise that merely manipulating form and facilitating function in design, fails to result in a building that evokes meaningful associations sufficient for a memorable experience to transpire. Nevertheless, there is little architectural theory that expresses how an architect can design a memorable place. This is because the memorable place evolves for many reasons, many of which are outside the control of the architect. This circumstance compels the dissertation to question; can an architect create a memorable place? In its endeavour to answer this question the dissertation is concerned with the extent of control an architect has in their attempt to create a memorable place. If architects are aware of the limitations present in this attempt, it may allow them to concentrate their efforts on the elements within their control. Exploring an architects control allows an investigation of the memorable place in relation to human experience and architectural design. This dissertation establishes the need for architects to be aware of the affect meaningful experiences have on an individual. It determines the memorable place as a significant objective in architecture and exposes the limitations an architect encounters in an effort to create memorable places. The dissertation establishes the extent of control an architect has in the attempt to create memorable places and validates the potential for an architect to contribute towards providing a sense of harmony, security and belonging, to individuals and society through responsible architectural design.n" @default.
