- W564114368 abstract "A detailed description is given of the two new versions of the friction retarder being introduced into heavy commercial vehicles. The retarder, an oil-cooled multi-brake can be mounted on the gearbox, the differential or the propeller shaft. Used in conjunction with the wheel brakes it can reduce the rate of wear of normal brake linings to one quarter. It is normally air driven but can be electrically or mechanically actuated. Constructional details are given of the original s type, the first model produced, and the modifications introduced in the drive-line mounted M type and the g and a types which are gearbox and axle mounted are also described. The design and function of the oil system is discussed. The engine coolant system is normally sufficient to dissipate the heat generated, but a separate heat exchanger may be needed in some cases.
