- W564743146 abstract "The paper describes the prediction of hydrodynamic damping on two-dimensional structural sections by a computational method, based on a finite difference solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. The method uses discrete moving point vortices to represent the convection of the vorticity field generated by the flow past the structural section. The results presented here are for laminar flow. In the case of circular cylinders in small amplitude oscillatory motion the forces are calculated directly and compared with drag and inertia coefficients measured in laboratory experiments over a range of the viscous Stokes parameter for which the boundary layers remain laminar. The method predicts the increasing drag (or damping) coefficient associated with thickening and incipient separation of the boundary layers. Computations have been carried out over a range of 3 parameters from 100 to 500 and Kc from 0.5, at which the boundary layers are attached Stokes layers and the drag coefficient is decreasing with increasing Kc, to 5.0 at which some vortex shedding is occurring and the drag coefficient is increasing. In the case of other sections, such as rectangular pontoon sections with rounded corners, basic results obtained for a right angled rounded corner have been used to predict the hydrodynamic damping on the whole cross-section at small Keulegan-Carpenter number by a matching technique.
