- W565546504 abstract "Recent findings suggesting antifibrotic and vasodilatory functions of the alternate arm of the renin–angiotensin system (RAS) in liver disease open avenues for the development of drugs targeting the enzymes and/or receptors of this system. There is also new evidence showing that there is increased regional production of angiotensin-(1-7) (Ang-(1-7)) in the liver and mesenteric vascular bed in cirrhosis and that strategies such as long-term angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) therapy or oral formulations of Ang-(1-7) hold a promise for the treatment of patients with chronic liver disease. This arm of the RAS may also play an important protective role in the gastrointestinal tract and may be involved in the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease. ACE2 also appears to function independent of its role in the RAS to regulate gut amino acid homeostasis and to protect from intestinal inflammation. These findings suggest that the alternate RAS may provide a range of novel targets for the management of both liver and gastrointestinal tract disorders." @default.
