- W566509536 abstract "Structural violence is a phenomena where the built environment marginalizes or harms a certain group or community in a city. This can often result in different forms of social exclusions occurring among communities in a city. Mexico’s dynamic urban landscape has been vastly contributing to structural violence, social exclusion issues and a changing demand in transportation. The country has faced rapid urbanization and was inducted into the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for achieving an a upper-middle class status due to the ‘successful’ implementation of structural adjustment policies over the past few decades. However, its built environment and particularly the structural violence attached to it forces many communities in Mexico’s cities to remain a Third World country on the ground. This paper will examine a case study done in Monterrey, Mexico on the accessibility of transport in the city and how it impacts travel behaviour, structural violence and social exclusion of low-income communities. It also seeks to understand why transportation limits opportunity for the poor in Monterrey. The methodology in this study involved a wide range of participatory observation research methods in the field as well as spatial, statistical and geographical analysis. It develops a causal theory for how access and infrastructure creates different forms of social exclusions. In Monterrey, evidence supports that transportation access and infrastructure influences demographic and cultural characteristics of the city, travel behaviour and urban development. This has lead to social exclusion of several communities and has limited opportunities for many of the citizens to fully participate in society." @default.
