- W566679998 abstract "Expansion and dissemination of the lexicon of Bislama: A study of user recognition and attitudes. The rising dominance of English as a global language is having an impact on a very large number of minority languages in the world. Bislama, the creole language of Vanuatu, is one such case. English, as the language of new technologies and commerce in the Pacific region, is influencing various aspects of Bislama's development. The present research is specifically focused on the influence of new items of vocabulary of English origin that are penetrating Bislama usage, and the potential comprehension difficulties that some ni-Vanuatu (people from Vanuatu) are experiencing. Most new items of vocabulary are entering the language at the urban level. Consequently, many town dwellers are becoming familiar with these language innovations and often use them in their everyday interactions. Over eighty percent of Vanuatu's population, however, are rural dwellers. As such, they are often less familiar with language innovations entering urban Vanuatu. At different times and for different reasons, however, rural ni-Vanuatu are exposed to these innovations (e.g., through radio broadcasts and print media). When this happens, confusion and communication difficulties often occur. This research investigates the expansion and dissemination of the lexicon of Bislama and the particular influence of the variables Location (where the individual lives), Education, Gender and Age on comprehension levels of new vocabulary items. Each of these four independent variables is further divided into a number of sub-variables: Location is divided into Urban I (high socio-economic urban), Urban 2 (low socio-economic urban), and Rural (general rural); Education is divided into Primary (educated at primary level only), Secondary (educated to secondary level), and Tertiary (educated to tertiary level); Gender is divided between male and female; and Age is divided between 15-35 years old and older than 35 years. This research project initially involves an investigation and comparison of the relative lexical densities of different varieties of Bislama as well as English, as Bislama 's primary lexical source. This provides necessary introductory insights into the varying degrees to which English lexicon is penetrating Bislama. The main body of the research examines the influence of the variables on the uptake of new lexis and then tests for statistical significance and the relative strength of the relationships between the four primary independent variables on the comprehension of new lexis. This project utilises a test data set and an authentic data set in an interview environment. The test data set enables informants to demonstrate their ability to recognise individual new items of lexis occurring in Bislama. The authentic data-set enables informants to demonstrate their ability to understand lexical developments in Bislama used in the context of media broadcasts. The research also seeks to gain an understanding of speaker awareness of developments in Bislama, speaker attitudes towards these changes, and various coping strategies that individuals employ when confronted with unfamiliar words appearing in their language." @default.
