- W566702159 abstract "The potential for multiple use of transportation corridors has become a major environmental consideration in every large city. In the case of the new San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART), lines are located where they will create the least interference with surface traffic and require the least amount of valuable urban land. Most of the mileage is located either underground, underwater, above ground on aerial structure, in the median of existing urban arterials or in the right-of-way of railroads or highways. This article gives examples of how the new transit lines were fitted into the right-of-way of existing highway and railroad lines. In one instance, the California Division of Highways was planning to widen a stretch of California State Route 24 and build a new eight-lane freeway. BART consulting engineers were planning a high-speed transit line in the same area and wanted to locate the line within the median of the reconstructed Route 24 and the new freeway. The agencies worked together to develop a practical formula for sharing the cost, responsibility for design and construction supervision. Working together resulted in a significant right-of-way cost savings. Other joint use ventures included the establishment of linear parks under BART elevated lines in residential areas." @default.
