- W566703026 abstract "The problems of closing a motorway lane are examined in detail in this series of three articles on the traffic management and contraflow introduced during the roadworks on the M5 in Worcestershire. When designing contraflow traffic layouts, great importance was attached to programming the work, considering each stage relative to other stages, the strength of the hard shoulder, and the suitability of diversions and alternative routes. In the setting up of the narrow-lanes contraflow system, it was found to be necessary to close two slip roads because of the difficulty of filtering traffic into a single file, and the need for two-way access to the site for contractors and emergency vehicles. Details are given of the signing and timetable for setting up diversions and contraflow. Traffic flow monitoring needs to be carried out well before the works begin to estimate: (a) the flow that diversions will have to handle and whether minor traffic management measures are needed; and (b) the possible damage to road surfaces caused by the diverted motorway traffic.
