- W567288189 abstract "Traffic impact analysis is typically conducted for large and small development projects to determine the transportation improvements needed to support the development. Typical steps include trip generation, trip distribution, analysis of future traffic conditions, capacity analysis, and identification of recommended roadway improvements. For small projects, the traffic generated by the project is relatively insignificant in comparison to overall regional traffic conditions and many of the calculations are typically done without consideration of how the project will change regional traffic patterns. As projects increase in size, it becomes more important to investigate the interactions with regional traffic that will occur as a result of project implementation. In order to utilize regional traffic forecasting models in conducting traffic impact analyses, it is important to have a basic understanding of the capabilities and limitations of regional models. Such models typically provide a good overall representation of the regional highway network and land use forecasts for a future horizon year (usually 20 years in the future). Regional models usually contain reasonable predictions of Average Daily Traffic conditions on major highways, but often have difficulty predicting peak hour conditions, intersection turning movements, and traffic conditions along smaller streets. The use of regional models to conduct traffic impacts analysis requires knowledge of both regional travel forecasting and the operational analysis of local street networks and intersections. In this area of traffic engineering and transportation planning, there are few hard and fast rules and a lot of judgment is typically applied. This paper presents a compilation of the author's experience and techniques in using regional traffic models for the following types of analyses: Trip Generation; Trip Distribution; Estimates of Future Peak Hour Intersection Turning Movements; and Evaluation/Refinement of Regional Model Forecasts for Use in Traffic Impact Analysis." @default.
