- W567708035 abstract "The fuji-ohashi bridge was constructed in 1952 through to 1953. More than thirty years have passed since its erection and it has suffered increasing deterioration. The width of the bridge was 5.9 m, and it has not been provided with a sidewalk so that a replacement prrogramme was established in order to guarantee the safety and flow of traffic. Types for a new bridge were studied and compared under river conditions, bearing ground, clearance, and location over a dammed-up lake which has a water depth of approximately 20 m. As a result, a trussed langer girder combined with a simple steel plate girder (bridge length 219 m, width 12.0 m, span 175.0 m + 41.9 m) was selected since the combination was found to be most advantageous economically as well as in construction method, safety and reliability; it had the fewest number of piers in the substructure which was to be executed under water. The construction of the piers under water was carried out by pneumatic caissons with floating shoes, which was most favorable in terms of economy, construction method and safety. It was decided to construct the side span of the superstructure, after examining various erection methods, to use a truck crane with temporary supports and the main span by cable erection with a vertical hanger method. Since the suspended weight was very great, amounting to 1480 ton, the installation of two separate sets of towers was decided for the vertical suspension and for the transport of machinery and materials. However, the size of the towers was so big that those for the vertical suspension were newly manufactured because they were not available in Japan, while erection was underway. Also the towers for transport had their upper and lower parts connected with hinges with a stay at the lower part. The erection was executed by making use of these towers. (TRRL)" @default.
