- W567845694 abstract "A short review of alternative methods for sensitivity analysis is made. Insufficient experimental data on vehicle fuel consumption and emissions production exists for this analysis. From a range of mathematical models it is argued that deterministic models, which describe at least the major features of engine and vehicle behaviour, are required for vehicle design sensitivity analysis, although a 'new' four term equation may be sufficient for the description of the influence of changes to driving patterns at the 'micro trip' scale. If more detailed micro analysis is needed, then 'modal' or deterministic models must be employed to examine effects of changes to acceleration profiles and the like. In the main, four urban and one highway driving cycles are employed to evaluate the sensitivity of a medium sized car to changes in simple design variables, power, mass, 'size', aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance and gear ratios. In summary, reducing power and vehicle mass make more significant reductions to HC, CO and NOx emissions and fuel consumption than aerodynamic drag or rolling resistance in urban driving. The present Australian test cycle ADR27a tends to underestimate emissions and fuel usage and yield larger response to reducing aerodynamic drag, but smaller response to mass reduction than Australian driving cycles. As about one half the energy used in urban driving is 'wasted' as idle or no load fuel and in accelerating the vehicle, significant reduction in all three pollutants and fuel consumption can be expected if driving patterns are significantly modified to increase average speed to 40 to 60 km/h and reduce speed noise (a)." @default.
